About

Meet the Artist

Wizard’s journey began at a Renaissance Faire when he was just seven years old. What started as a childhood fascination has grown into a masterful craft. When he isn’t at his workbench (usually with a cat nearby), you’ll find him gearing up for a fencing tournament, playing piano, or dreaming up new patterns. Every piece he creates is a testament to his dedication as a young artist.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Everyone Wants to Know…

Is your name really Wizard?

Yes. Really.

How long have you been weaving chainmaille?

Since I was 7 years old.

How did you learn to weave maille?

While visiting a Renaissance Faire I took a workshop to learn a “beginner” pattern. It took a few hours to complete, but I was determined to finish. It was exciting to see my creation and I immediately wanted to learn more. My mom connected me with master weaver and chainmaille extraordinaire, Rebeca Mojica. She mentored me and gave me endless tips. It is because of her support and patience that I am still creating jewelry today. I also learned how to do a very advanced weave with her guidance. Once finished, she wrote this little article about my experience: Rebeca Mojica. (A.) In Case You Want To Give Up On Your Chainmaille Project, This Kid Might Inspire You To Keep Going

What is Chainmaille?

Chainmaille is probably the earliest forms of metal armor. It is created from hundreds or thousands of metal rings being “woven” or linked together to create patterns. Chainmaille armor and jewelry dates back to more than 2,500 years ago. Chainmaille armor is still created today for reenactments. However, this special craft is widely appreciated as intricate jewelry pieces due to it’s unique and sometimes ancient patterns that are all thoughtfully handcrafted. No machines. Nothing is mass produced. Just two hands, a pair of pliers, and some good eyesight. This is why your jewelry is so special. With more understanding of how the artist creates each piece, not only is the jewelry admired by many, but the reverence and mystery for this ancient craft remains timeless.

From ancient to modern weaves, chainmaille jewelry always brings a sense of awe and inspiration. Feeling its slinky links is a textural experience which can bring calmness to your day.

Do you create custom designs?

Absolutely. Knowing that each piece is entirely handwoven, your chainmaille jewelry will be custom made with you in mind. I enjoy making jewelry for people I know. Please email me at WizardsMaille@gmail.com so we can create something special!

Where does the meaning come from?

There’s been a lot of research, and I found this explanation to be quite thorough. It’s from a site called TheCollector.com. The source is below if you want more info.

“It is unclear exactly where or how the term mail originated. It is possible that the term derives from the Latin word macula, which means “spot” or “opacity;” possibly a reference to the metal rings or the ability to see through the armor. Another theory is that it originated from the Old French word mailler, which means “to hammer.” In modern French, the word maille, refers to “a loop” or “a stitch,” possibly lending some credence to the theory of the term’s French origins. The earliest records of the term appear in Old French and Anglo-Norman as maille, maile, or male, and in Middle English as mailye, maille, maile, male, and meile.” Copied from: https://www.thecollector.com/scale-mail-armor-chainmail-types-and-styles/

How do I take care of my jewelry?

Most of the metals used in Wizard’s Maille are aluminum and stainless steel, with a few pieces made with bronze or copper. The bright colored rings are going to be made with aluminum that has been anodized (basically “shocked” with color). For these anodized aluminum rings, if they are scratched deeply enough then the color could be scratched off. Remove your jewelry before bed and before playing sports.

All jewelry absorbs oils, dirt, lotions, and even odors. This cannot be helped. The best way to clean your jewelry is to use a very mild dishwashing soap and gently rub the rings between your fingers, then rinse with cold or lukewarm water. Do not scrub to clean or to dry your jewelry.

To keep your colored rings looking bright and shiny, keep your jewelry out of direct sunlight. Yes, of course you can wear your jewelry outside! What we mean is, when you’re not wearing your colorful chainmaille, it’s best to keep them stored in a jewelry box vs. on a window sill.

Take off your colorful jewelry before showering or swimming. Chlorine and bath products will dull the color quickly.

Stainless steel will not tarnish. However, bronze will naturally patina, which gives it that great antique look. With these few easy care tips, your chainmaille will last a long, long time!
